History:

After the reunification Mr. and Mrs. Landeck built perforce their hobby in to a public institution. In an industrial wasteland in Zella-Mehlis on Talstrasse, a previous company which had got bankrupt was leaving 1994 some smaller aquariums for aquarium fish  - a chance to build the institution. Without any financial support, the concept was put into action. Everything you can visit today was privately financed. Already in the first year began a continuous development: June 1994 there were 10 200 sqm Aquariums. At the end of 1994 it was 20 700 sqm Aquariums. Two years later an extension of 1996/1997 was again possible to a total of 1,500 square meters. Even a a restaurant with 130 seats was added. The positive development continued - In 1998, the survey area was increased to 2,000 sqm. All in all 60 aquariums and terrariums 5 we presented to the guests. The first shark tank like all aquariums and terrariums were built in 95% own work. Finally, there were some inconsistencies with the landlords which let the decision to move to a larger place. But it was not so simple - a fully functional display aquarium had to move with all its inhabitants and its technology. The new home was the Beethovenstrasse 16 in Zella-Mehlis, the former "People's House", similar to a community center. After 1 1/2 years of construction - the business operations in the "old" Aquarium still went fully on - the new home was openeded on 12 October 2002. It was bigger, better and more visitor-friendly and presents it self as the "Erlebnispark Meeresaquarium".  With a outdoor area designed as Koi Park with three koi ponds, as well as the shark tanks (100,000, 250,000 and one million liters) and the 60 aquariums, as well as the separate crocodile house offers the means to an area of 7,150 square meters to make the visit an unforgettable, and for central Germany, unique experience. 

Entering the area you first meet koi and a play ground. After paying the entrance fee we look at 18 different aquaria showing especially fish from the coral reef.  In the following section are 9 other aquariua representing the coral reef and 2 aquaria representing the Amazon river. A nother aquarium show red-eared terrapines. Lets then look at the sharks, the shrk area has 4 aquariua with a huge aquarium for large sharks as well as smaller ones for reef sharks, the epaulette shark and carpetsharks. Back to the tank with river rays, we walk down the corridor to se some smaller crocodiles as the Cuvier's dwarf caiman. Here we are taking the steps up to the crocodile area. Its home to nile crocodile, mississippi alligators and  spectacled caimans among other. On this level you as well meet the axlotl, horse-shoe crabs and cichlides among other. Heading for the exit you meet the last shark tank.
